Terrace Bay
Skeleton Coast

Accommodation
The isolated Terrace Bay Camp, some call it resort!, stands at the end of the road that leads from Swakopmund along the Skeleton Coast towards the Kunene. Any travel further north requires special permits. It is run by the government-owned Namibia Wildlife Resorts and provides fairly basic accommodation in twenty en-suite double rooms and a beach chalet for larger families / groups.

Terrace Bay offers a restaurant where meals will be prepard for you. However do not expect 5* cuisine. There is also a small shop that sells basic supplies.

The Skeleton Coast is a special place. Rough, sometimes inhospitable, but attractive to many because of its inaccessability and solitude. The weather can be bad and foggy. The cold ocean currents from Antarctica (Benguela current) cause offshore trade winds that prevent rain over the mainland (similar to the Atacama Desert in Chile). This can lead to severe fog in the coastal region and complicate navigation for ships. Travellers should not be deterred by such conditions but embrace one of the last true wilderness areas in Namibia.

Location
The first part of the Skeleton Coast from Swakopmund to the north is open to the public. The Skeleton Coast National Park itself, a 16'845 kmĀ² large nature reserve, was founded in 1973 and was recently linked to the Namib-Naukluft Park via the Dorob National Park.

The southern entrance to the park is located after mile 108 near the Ugab river mouth. A permit is needed to enter the park. Most visitors leave the park via the Springbokwater gate on their way to Damaraland.

Terrace Bay is situated in the Skeleton Coast Park in north-west Namibia. It is around 5-6 hours drive north of the town of Swakopmund, and 2-3 hours from Damaraland Camp.

Activities
Terrace Bay is mostly used by fishermen. The Benguela Current brings in cold water from the Antarctica and this makes the coastline part one of the most productive ocean areas in the world.

Good to know
There is a petrol station. We are unsure how reliable petrol supplies are.
