Laba Ngorongoro
Ngorongoro Crater
Accommodation
With breathtaking views of surrounding lush forest and the majestic Oldeania and Makroto mountains, Laba Ngorongoro borders the Ngorongoro Crater's rim. Sitting at an altitude of 2,200 meters, Laba Ngorongoro offers a warm and luxurious retreat for exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Steeped in history, the original Conservator's house of the former Rhino Lodge has been preserved as a tribute to Henry Albert Fosbrooke (1905-1996), the region's first ecologist who established the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The symbolic dwelling is now the reception, bar-lounge and boutique of Laba Ngorongoro.
Each of the 20 spacious 50 m² suites includes a comfortable living area, a minibar and espresso machine, a dressing room, a bathroom with underfloor heating offering both bathtub and shower as well as a terrace to capture the exceptional views.
Location
Laba Ngorongoro is built on the historic site of the former Rhino Lodge, the oldest lodge on the crater. It enjoys an extraordinary location just steps from the crater rim and very close to the Lerai exit route.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera with 19km in diameter and walls 600m high. Its floor covers 260 square kilometres and acts like a natural zoo, providing food for a high resident animal population.
Wildlife
The mineral-rich crater floor is covered with nutritious grass and attracts large herds of animals. Up to 25'000 mammals, primarily herbivores can be found at any one time in the Ngorongoro Crater. The list includes wildebeest, eland, hartebeest, zebra, gazelle, buffalo, rhinos and warthog. Moors and forests provide food for hippo, elephant, baboon, waterbuck and bushbuck. Big cat such as lion, cheetah, leopard and serval find rich pickings here. Large packs of hyena also roam the crater, hunting or pinching the prey of other predators.
Activities
The lodge offers game drives on the crater floor and excursions on foot.
