Sungani Lodge
South Luangwa National Park

Accommodation
Sungani Lodge is the most Southerly Camp in the South Luangwa National Park. Just a little further upstream is Kulandila Camp. The properties are 6kms apart by vehicle. Sungani Lodge and Kulandila Camp are family run and the owners have a strong focus on conservation and have committed themselves to preserve and protect this remote corner of South Luangwa National Park. Accordingly, Sungani means custodian or keeper in the local Chichewa language.

Sungani Lodge is situated on the edge of a lagoon, sheltered by trees, and blends seamlessly into the landscape. The entire lodge is built on elevated decking, allowing guests to safely wander around during the day. The main area of the lodge has a variety of living spaces and a pool where your time is uninterrupted and the space is yours to do as you please. The library area provides a space to make use of the charging points, enjoy Wifi or read an interesting book.

The lodge offers seven luxury tents comprised of 4 rooms with a king-size bed and 3 rooms with two queen-size beds each. One of the rooms can be configured to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children as a family unit. The tents are set atop polished concrete floors to create a cool environment and offer approximately 110m² indoors to relax in. The rooms feature indoor and outdoor seating, a private deck with plunge pool, outdoor shower & toilet, large closet with plenty of storage, minibar, tea & coffee making facilities, aircon & ceiling fan.

Location
The Luangwa river begins its 770km life in Lilonda and the Mafinga hills, North East Zambia, forming one of the major tributaries of the mighty Zambezi river. Its elevation decreases and therefore it becomes a meandering ever changing river, with an expanse of oxbow lakes (known as Luangwa Wafwa’s) and many historical flood plains. This in turn creates a stunning array of different habitats owing to the valley’s dense wildlife populations. The valley floor itself covers an impressive 52,000 square kilometres or 20,000 square miles, of which the South Luangwa National Park covers about 9,050 square kilometres of exquisite, wild, and untouched wilderness.

As the Luangwa flows further south through the National park past Mfuwe and down to the southern reaches of the park it passes an area called the Lusangazi sector, which is the exclusive paradise that is Sungani Lodge and Kulandila Camp. Due to the very remote location, guests will fly from Mfuwe Airport to the Sungani airstrip in the Sungani Cessna 206 (4pax) - this is approximately a 20-minute flight. From the airstrip to camp is only a 5-min drive. If preferred, collection can be done by road which will take around 3 hours. Sungani is roughly 70 kilometres from Mfuwe Town.

Wildlife
The Luangwa valley is known as the “valley of the leopard” for its dense leopard population. It boasts the largest hippo population on earth as well as a plethora of other wildlife including, lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo.

Thornicroft's giraffe, Cookson's wildebeest and Crawshay's zebra are unique to South Luangwa National Park.

Activities
Activities comprise game drives in open 4x4 vehicles and bushwalks with armed rangers. There is a viewing deck/platform at the end of Sungani Lagoon and a sunken hide at a waterhole by the river which service both properties. A mobile carmine hide will be erected depending on where the carmine bee-eaters nest.
