Nsefu Camp
South Luangwa National Park
Accommodation
Nsefu Camp is a classic South Luangwa camp. Slightly raised and painted white, the stone-built, thatched rondavels are reminiscent of a traditional hunter's camp with a small veranda attached. The round rooms are just big enough to fit in a large bed, but not much else. The attached bathroom, however, is quite spacious and also provides space to store your luggage.
The camp is situated on the outer bend of a river and large numbers of elephant and buffalo can be seen migrating to the water. Made of stone and thatch, the main building has an open-plan design and is slightly elevated to offer one of the valley's best river views. Close by is a fire pit for evening barbecues and a small waterhole that is frequently visited by elephants.
Nsefu Camp remains open during the Emerald Season in April and May, when boat and walking safaris are on offer (roads are no longer navigable). The transfer from Nkwali Camp to Nsefu Camp is also made by boat.
Location
Nsefu Camp is situated on the eastern bank of the Luangwa River in the Nsefu Sector in the northern part of South Luangwa National Park. Journey time from Mfuwe Airport is about 1.5 hours. Transfer from one camp to the other is planned as a morning game drive, often on a private basis. Tena Tena Camp is located approximately 30 minutes drive away.
Wildlife
Lion, leopard and hyena are quite abundant here, and the odd wild dog may also be encountered. Luangwa River is on the doorstep and supports crocodile and hippo. This region is also home to elephant, buffalo, zebra, kudu, impala, puku and a large variety of birdlife.
Large colonies of bee-eaters can be photographed on the banks of the Luangwa River throughout September and October.
Activities
The camp offers game drives in an open 4x4 vehicle, walks with armed rangers and a village visit (Kawaza Village).
Several-day walks are organised between Tena Tena Camp and Nsefu Camp, usually with two overnight stays. Guests are accompanied by an armed ranger and guide, and the tents are erected each night by a support team. Lion, leopard, buffalo and elephant may be encountered on these walks. Guests also learn about plants, tracks, dung and the animals' social relationships. Limited to a maximum of 4 guests. Read more about the Nsefu Trail.
