Lake Kivu
Africa's sixth largest lake
Bathing fun in Rwanda
Lake Kivu forms the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It lies in the western foothills of the East African Rift Valley (Albertine Rift) at about 1500m. The deep blue lake is about one and a half times the size of the canton of Zurich and almost 500 meters deep in some places.
The road along the lake is very beautiful and has been tarred all the way. The small town of Kibuye is about halfway between Nyungwe Forest and Virunga National Park which makes it a good stopover if you wish to spend some days at the lake. Gisenyi is located at the northern end of the lake and is a popular destination for the bathers from Kigali who come here to relax on the weekends. Gisenyi is the border town to the Democratic Republic of Congo with Goma on the other side.
