Angama Mara
Maasai Mara, Mara Triangle

Accommodation
Angama Mara is perched on the 300 m high ridge of the Great Rift Valley. The name Angama Mara is a Swahili phrase meaning “suspended in mid-air”. Architecture and design unite to give guests the impression that they really are floating somewhere between heaven and earth. The complex offers a breathtaking 180° view of the Maasai Mara Triangle.

The luxurious Angama Mara comprises two separate camps, each with 15 exclusive safari tents and a lounge and restaurant area. Each 70 m2 tent suite boasts an elegant sleeping area, en-suite bathroom and a generous panoramic terrace. The safari-style interior combines modern simplicity with luxurious furnishings. The complex also has a swimming pool, gym and library.

The Angama Mara is set in spectacular surroundings, which featured in several scenes of the film “Out of Africa”. And many will recognise the landscape, one of the most beautiful and wildlife-rich in the whole of Africa, from the film. The camp is a memorable destination, which, in addition to the ultimate Out-of-Africa-romance also offers an exciting blend of nostalgic colonial style and contemporary chic, as well as the finest cuisine and exceptional service.

Location
The flight to Angama Mara from Nairobi takes about 45 minutes. The lodge sits on the northern tip of the Mara Triangle, which is defined by the Oloololo Escarpment, the Mara River and the border to Tanzania in the south. The Mara Triangle comprises some 500 km² and has been managed for many years by the Mara Conservancy. Angama has its own airstrip, the Angama Mara Airfield.

The Maasai Mara abuts the Serengeti to the north to form the border with Tanzania. The reserve covers an area of approx. 1'510 km² and receives water via the Sand River, the Talek River and, of course, the Mara River.

Wildlife
The Maasai Mara is home to one of the highest concentrations of big cat in Africa and more than 50 species of raptor. Lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, buffalo and elephant are high on the must-see list of most visitors here, and it is indeed the most likely place to get a snapshot of all of them.

Additionally, July sees the arrival of the first ca. two million wildebeest, zebra and Thompson’s gazelle that migrate from the Serengeti to feast on the fresh green grass of the Maasai Mara. They remain until September, when they make their way south again towards the Serengeti. The animals traverse the Mara River, where hungry crocodiles lie in wait for their prey, a spectacle known as ‘river crossings’.

Activities
Game drives, hiking on the escarpment, balloon flights (additional costs), visit to a local village (additional costs).

The game drives take place in the Mara Triangle where you can expect to meet less other game drive vehicles than on the eastern side of the Mara River. The Angama Mara benefits from a private access road to the Mara Triangle, meaning visitors are able to avoid using the Oloololo Gate, which is located further north.

The vehicles carry a maximum of six passengers. Snacks and drinks are included on the excursions. The camp tries to supply every party of guests with a private vehicle, however this can't be guaranteed.
