2 nights Victoria Falls Hotel, Victoria Falls

Witness to its own fair share of history, the Victoria Falls Hotel was built in 1904 during the reign of England's King Edward VII, and reflects the opulent Edwardian style. Monarchs, Presidents, Hollywood stars and other VIPs have all strut the corridors of this ‘grand old lady of the falls'. The hotel was just recently renovated in a manner still echoing its glorious past.

The well-manicured tropical garden with its water lily pond and shady palms offers first-rate views of the Victoria Falls and the historical bridge connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia. The hotel comprises 94 rooms of varying price class, three restaurants, two tennis courts, a large swimming pool, library, bar, spa with hair salon and a souvenir shop.

Location
Victoria Falls Hotel is ideally situated in the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, with the actual falls located just ten minutes walk away. For a modest fee, guests may visit the small park running alongside the falls on the Zambian side. The path leads along the top of the gorge and offers spectacular views of the water as it thunders over the edge.

The Zambezi River rises in north-western Zambia and crosses several African countries on its 2700 km journey to the Indian Ocean. The river also forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. At Victoria Falls, the water falls for more than 100m into Batoka Gorge, over a width of nearly two kilometers. The falls are called 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' or 'the Smoke that Thunders', as the spray can be seen from miles away and, at the height of the rainy season, more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge.

By Plane Flight to Little Makalolo
3 nights Little Makalolo, Hwange National Park

Little Makalolo Camp offers a superb close-to-nature safari experience in Nwange National Park. This small and intimate camp offers just six tents erected on a stone floor with en-suite bathrooms, verandas and additional outdoor showers. The main building comprises an open-plan lounge and a dining tent with a fire pit located just in front, where guests can cosy-up and review the day's activities. The plunge pool is a hit with both guests and elephants alike.

A waterhole well frequented by elephant is located to the front of the camp. A woodpile acts as a hide where guests can view the wildlife from behind/underneath - observing elephants from below is an unforgettable experience.

Location
Little Makalolo Camp is situated in the south-eastern Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. A short flight (50 minutes) takes guests from Victoria Falls to Makalolo Airstrip, followed by a scenic drive along the riverbed, passing several well-frequented waterholes on the way to camp. The camp is part of the private 31'000 hectare Makalolo Concession and self-drivers and other guests are not permitted.

By Plane Flight to Changa Safari Camp
2 nights Changa Safari Camp, Lake Kariba, Matusadona National Park

Changa Camp is the only permanent camp in Matusadona National Park. The camp owns a private concession, with exclusive access to nearly five kilometers of Lake Kariba’s shoreline!

With only six double tents and two family tents, Changa Camp is a personal and intimate affair, located right on the shores of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe. Each room offers a private veranda, outdoor bath and shower.

The main area plays host to the dining room and some lounge corners. A stairway leads down onto a lower deck with a fire pit and further on to the wide beach of glittering white sand and the swimming pool, the perfect spot to sit and relax whilst enjoying a refreshing drink. Food is served on a communal table in the dining area or under a canopy of trees on the deck, or at the sandy beach in front of camp.

The swimming pool is a wonderfully shaded haven equipped with sun loungers and private seating areas. Because Changa is set on the shores of Lake Kariba, it enjoys cooling breezes all day from the prevailing wind that comes across the water into camp.

Location
The Matusadona National Park consists of about 338,000 acres of unspoiled and unfenced wilderness. Rugged mountains, springs and streams, Miomba woodlands and Mopane scrublands, pristine riverine vegetation, crystal clear lake water and grass flanked shoreline all combine to create a unique habitat for animals.

Access is by plane into Fothergill Island airfield. The duration of the flights is approximately an hour and a half from either Harare or Victoria Falls. Guests are met by a Changa representative, who will transfer them into camp on a short 20-minute boat transfer.

By Plane Flight to Ruckomechi Camp
3 nights Ruckomechi Camp, Mana Pools National Park

Ruckomechi Camp offers ten spacious tents with large bathrooms and additional outdoor showers. All tents have a small forecourt with chairs and river views. The rooms are open and airy and their many windows offer fantastic panoramic views of passing wildlife.

Five rooms are located either side of the main building, which is accessed via raised wooden platforms and houses a pool, library, lounge, bar and the dining area. An outdoor deck with plenty of cushions and integrated fireplace is the ideal spot for morning coffee or a good story to round off the day.

Location
Mana Pools National Park is situated in Zambezi Valley, North Zimbabwe, on the border with Zambia. The opposite side of the Zambezi is home to the mountains of the Great African Rift Valley and Lower Zambezi National Park. This section of the Zambezi is renowned for its four large lagoons: Main, Chine, Long and Chisambuk. ‘Mana' actually means ‘four' in the local Shona language.

The camp is located on the banks of the Zambezi inside a private concession bordering the actual park. No other vehicles are permitted to drive in this area and as the concession is located just outside the park, night drives are allowed as well.

Ruckomechi Camp can be reached by flying to Harare in Zimbabwe before taking a 1.5-hour light aircraft flight to camp, or in a light aircraft from Victoria Falls (2 hrs). Transfer from Mana West Airstrip to camp takes around 30 minutes.

By Plane Flight to Singita Pamushana
4 nights Singita Pamushana, Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve

Offering fantastic views of the dam it overlooks, Singita Pamushana Lodge sits high upon a hill. The lodge’s unique design is based on the vibrant colours and patterns of the native Shangaan culture. As with all Singita lodges, both service and cuisine are exceptional – we can recommend a stay here of 4 or even 7 days without hesitation. The lodge’s elevated position affords spectacular views and its rooms offer guests an oasis of comfort, relaxation and tranquillity.

The lodge comprises four one-bedroom suites, two two-bedroom suites (4 adults), one two-bedroom family suite for 2 adults and 2 children, a three-bedroom family suite for 2 adults and 4 children and the Malilangwe House located on the edge of the lodge’s estate offering 5 bedrooms, a luxuriously spacious lounge and a private kitchen. All suites come with a private plunge pool, a deck with loungers and an extra outdoor shower. The Malilangwe House features a proper infinity pool.

Somewhat fortress-like in appearance, yet very laid back on the inside, the main building houses a large swimming pool, bar, lounge, the spa and two further tempered pools, one of which is a whirlpool. There are various decks and corners where guests can dine, on most evenings this is under the stars.

Location
Sharing a border with Gonarezhou National Park, Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve is located in the southeast of Zimbabwe.

The nearest large airport is Buffalo Range Airport, which is accessed by light aircraft from Johannesburg in approximately 2 hours (Mon and Thu only). This is also the place where border formalities are carried out. The authorities generally only open the office for guests arriving at and departing from Singita. Now deserted, Buffalo Range Airport with its huge tarmac runway was once used for international flights.

Pamushana Lodge is built on a hill in the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve some 40 minutes’ drive from the airport. The journey passes the village of Chiredzi with its sugar plantations before heading towards Gonarezhou National Park and Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve.

Guests arriving by chartered aircraft can land at Lonestar Airstrip. This is located just 25 minutes’ drive from the lodge. Border formalities, however, must still be carried out at Buffalo Range Airport.
