Tuningi Safari Lodge
Madikwe Game Reserve

Accommodation
Tuningi Safari Lodge offers accommodation for 16 guests. Tuningi comprises four double rooms and two family rooms (each for 4 guests). All rooms are spacious and stylishly furnished.

All rooms come with air conditioning, gas fireplace for those cooler nights, en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower and large veranda.

The thatched main building houses a magnificent lounge, a dining area with bar and an infinity pool. The wildlife wanders down both sides of the lodge to the waterhole, where a tree-shaded deck provides the ideal place for an evening meal. Guests have an excellent view of the waterhole from the deck and are likely to see thirsty game taking a drink.

Tuningi is very family friendly and welcomes children of all ages. Here are some pictures of the family room.

Location
Covering 75’000 hectares, Madikwe Game Reserve sits on the Botswana border in the north of South Africa. The park can be reached by road from Johannesburg or the Waterberg region in 3.5 hours.

The park has two airstrips, one in the western part and one in the eastern part. The park can be reached by air from Johannesburg in 55 minutes.

Tuningi Safari Lodge is situated in the park’s western part.

Wildlife
Madikwe was newly established in 1991 when the land was purchased from white farmers and populated with hundreds of animals from all over Africa. Known as ‘Operation Phoenix’, this undertaking went down in South Africa’s history as an example of how farmland can be put to alternative use, earning both money through tourism and providing a necessary habitat for wildlife.

The grazed pastures are recovering slowly but surely. The region, however, primarily comprises Kalahari sand and lacks high trees. Nevertheless, it is varied enough to support the Big 5 and many other species of animal. Today, Madikwe is home to elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah, hyena, lion, wild dog, zebra, giraffe and various species of antelope and bird – to name but a few.

Activities
The lodge offers game drives and comes with its own swimming pool.

Children are very welcome at Tuningi Safari Lodge. Those over the age of 6 may go on ‘normal’ game drives. Smaller children remain at camp where they can participate in continually supervised activities (drawing, pot making, puzzles, bathing etc.). They can take part in a child-friendly game drive or go off on educational treasure hunts in search of bones, bird nests and snake skins. The kids can also eat separately, dining on novelty ‘snake bread’, marshmallows and self-made pizzas. Early in-room dining is also available on request.

Good to know
Madikwe Game Reserve is free of malaria.
