Accommodation
Offering a high quality safari experience, Madikwe Hills appropriately crowns a hill in the park’s northeast. Connected to the main building by wooden walkways, its 10 150 m² suites are scattered over the slope. Each room has a large glass front, a private deck with plunge pool, large beds, a lounge, en-suite bathroom with additional outdoor shower and air conditioning, ventilators, a fireplace and a minibar.

In addition to a curio shop located next to reception, the lodge also offers a gym, a spa, a boma (traditional area with open fire for dining under the stars) and a restaurant with bar. A huge deck where guests can sit outside and observe the waterhole is situated to the front of the restaurant. The lodge also boasts a large swimming pool.

Little Madikwe is part of Madikwe Hills and can be booked on a fully exclusive basis for a family.

Location
Covering 75’000 hectares, Madikwe Game Reserve sits on the Botswana border in the north of South Africa. The park can be reached by road from Johannesburg or the Waterberg region in 3.5 hours.

The park has two airstrips, one in the western part and one in the eastern part. The park can be reached by air from Johannesburg in 55 minutes.

Situated in a rather private valley with little to no traffic, Madikwe Hills sits in the park’s northeast.

Wildlife
Madikwe was newly established in 1991 when the land was purchased from white farmers and populated with hundreds of animals from all over Africa. Known as ‘Operation Phoenix’, this undertaking went down in South Africa’s history as an example of how farmland can be put to alternative use, earning both money through tourism and providing a necessary habitat for wildlife.

The grazed pastures are recovering slowly but surely. The region, however, primarily comprises Kalahari sand and lacks high trees. Nevertheless, it is varied enough to support the Big 5 and many other species of animal. Today, Madikwe is home to elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah, hyena, lion, wild dog, zebra, giraffe and various species of antelope and bird – to name but a few.

Activities
The lodge offers game drives and bushwalking (for over 16s).

Good to know
Madikwe Game Reserve is free of malaria.
