Malaria-free parks north of Johannesburg
Madikwe Game Reserve, Big-5
Waterberg, Marakele, Welgevonden Parks
Because of their location at 1200 m to 1600 m above sea level, the parks north of Johannesburg are free of malaria. This makes them the ideal alternative to parks in the Eastern Cape for families with children.
Madikwe Game Reserve opened in 1991. Land was first bought from white farmers before wildlife was reintroduced to the area. Entering South Africa’s history books as ‘Operation Phoenix’, it now stands as a prime example of how farmland can be used in a different way. Today, Madikwe Game Reserve is a Big 5 park.

Home to several interesting camps and parks, the Waterberg region is easy to combine with the Madikwe – we recommend Ant’s, the Marakele National Park and Welgevonden.
